DON’T GIVE YOURSELF ANOTHER CHOICE by Paluna Santamaria.
I’m on holidays away from home. Training doesn’t stop because of that.
I brought a friend to the gym I’m training at while in Mexico. When we finished we were invited to a BBQ. “Chill gathering” they said. “Just come and have something to eat.” We had just trained and there was meat so we went, because well… gains.
As soon as we arrived, I remembered, “chill gathering” in Mexico is synonym of drinking (which I never do), eating dancing and singing (there was karaoke). Long story short, I got home at 6am, which I haven’t done in probably 10 years.
For some reason I could only sleep 4hrs, which means the next day, I was exhausted. Either way I got ready for the gym, yawning and mentioning to my sister how tired I was.
What if you don’t go? -She asked
What do you mean? -I answered
Yeah, what happens if you don’t go? -She insisted
Well, that option doesn’t exist. If there is a gym around and I’ve got training scheduled, I’m going. Rain or shine. Christmas, birthdays. I’m going.
I’ve learned to accept that people who don’t train will never get this. They don’t understand that to you this is not a sacrifice; this is something you have to do.
There is a time to slow down and yes, recovery is a big part of a training cycle but you have to know yourself really well to know when it’s time to slow down and when it’s ok to challenge your system. You only learn this by making training a priority.
Life will give you enough challenges that will force you to adapt to a different environment, to change your routine. Those are the moments where you can say ok I have no choice but to take the day off or ok there’s no barbell around, what else can I do?
If you give yourself a choice in moments of weakness (being tired, stressed, sad) you will end up skipping training and the truth is, training will ALWAYS make everything better. Whether you realize how much you need time off or how much better you feel for having pushed through. You will come out having learned something and that is priceless.
So next time your family, friends or the lazy voice in your head questions you, give yourself no other choice because the barbell doesn’t lie and every second away from it is a step away from progress.
Wherever you are, happy holidays and happy training!!
